Back to the Future 99 word challenge

Given that yesterday was “Back to the Future Day”, my writing group had a 99 word challenge set around the idea of the future in 25 years time.  Here’s my attempt –

Back to the Future 99 Word Challenge

October 2040

Dublin

The helicopter blades whip the air into a frenzy and it causes our tent flap to open. I reach out to close it, trying to prevent as much dust getting in as possible. My mother coughs from her sleeping bag as the irritant reaches her lungs. As I hand her some water, I wonder about who the police are searching for outside. They don’t come to our slums to keep the peace, but only to chase down offenders. Ever since the war the once affluent suburbs are a no go area. The Dublin my mother wistfully remembers is long gone.
